"Light-Horse Harry" Lee
Henry Lee III (1756–1818), a cavalry officer in the Continental army who earned the nickname "Light-Horse Harry" for his service during the Revolutionary War, is the subject of this signed engraving. Lee became the ninth governor of Virginia (1791–1794) and later served as a Virginia member of the U.S. House of Representatives (1799–1801). At George Washington's funeral Lee eulogized the former president as being "first in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen." One of Lee's sons was Robert E. Lee, who became a Confederate general during the Civil War.
