Storage Pit at Crab Orchard Archaeological Site
This large storage pit with charred timbers at the bottom was excavated in the 1970s at the Crab Orchard Archaeological Site in Southwest Virginia near Pisgah. Excavations there uncovered evidence of a Virginia Indian town that dates to between ca. AD 1400 and 1600. The settlement was surrounded by a palisade, or tall wooden wall. Outside the wall was a semi-subterranean structure probably used as a communal meeting space. This storage pit was located near that communal gathering place.
