The Capture of Lookout Mountain
Harper's Weekly depicts Union forces, under the command of Joseph Hooker, assaulting a Confederate line during the "Battle Above the Clouds," a part of the Battle of Chattanooga (1863) during the American Civil War (1861–1865). Hooker, once commander of the Army of the Potomac, had been outflanked by Confederate general Robert E. Lee at the Battle of Chancellorsville earlier that year, and had been removed from command and transferred west. Over the next year, Hooker and his troops saw further action in William Tecumseh Sherman's Atlanta Campaign.
